- The origin of the mockingjay pin is certainly not correct. In the book, it was given to Katniss by Madge (whose character was not even mentioned in the movie). The mockingjays are important symbols in all three books. It is a secret sign that a fight for freedom from the Capitol is still alive. The movie downplays the importance of the mockingjay pin i.e., Rue believed that she could trust Katniss seeing her wearing the pin; Cinna exerting extra efforts to help Katniss because of the pin, etc.
- The avox girls were not around, they were the symbols of the cruelty of the Capitol and they had helped Katniss;
- The three (3) finger salute is unique to District 12;
- The “bread scene” from District 11 was totally omitted, but this is critical in the succeeding books;
- The duration of the game was 2 weeks only. In the book, as long as it takes;
- The movie rushed some scenes from books 2 and 3: President Snow in his rose garden; the riots breaking out; and the cruel death of Crane;
- The ending of the movie was not as intense in the book. I was expecting the scene that shows how much the game had affected Katniss emotionally and mentally. In the book, Katniss and Peeta were as good as dead when they were declared winner. They had to undergo physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation before they were allowed to go home. This situation will later impact greatly their succeeding lives in the next two books.

View from the Side: "The Hunger Games"
My Thoughts on the Movie
“The Hunger Games” movie is an adaptation of the first of a trilogy best-selling books of Suzanne Collins. I completed reading all three books months before the showing of the first installment of the movie series. I am a fan of Katniss and Gale from the start, but it’s not the love story that caught my attention. I was particularly interested on the aspects of the political and social issues presented: the struggle of the poor and the oppressed for freedom of hunger; and the struggle of the politician to control the poor/oppressed to stay in power. This situation is not different from what the current reality of today.
Anyway, my intention in writing this blog is not to dwell on the content of the book, but just to provide a short contrast between the book and the movie. While I enjoyed watching the movie with my friends, I can’t help myself feeling frustrated that there are things that had been omitted or given less significance that I believed are critical in shaping the whole story.
Well, I just hope that the next adaptation movies will still stir my interest. Let the game begins… MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!

Series 14: "The List" #3 - Thirty Crazy Things I Would Love To Do
This is the 14th series of the guessing game I posted in twitter and facebook. For a backgrounder, please refer to my post entitled "Series 1: The List #3 - Thirty Crazy Things I Would Love To Do" dated 1/29/2012.
#15 Crazy Thing I Would Love To Do
“FALL IN LOVE DEEPLY --- HELPLESSLY AND UNCONDITIONALLY”
I was then in my 5th year college… with no boyfriend since birth! All my friends had boy/girl friends. During that time, I think I am ready to try this new world for me! I wished if I fall, I would fall completely. And I promised myself that I would strive hard to make our relationship lasting and forever. My attitude was that “no matter what… whatever it takes”! I love him and he loves me period! At the same time, I would like also to experience that wonderful feeling of complete submission, since I am always independent and domineering. This is what I learned from all the love novels that I had read.
I don't have to go to Paris to fall in love. I want to fall in love anywhere, then go to Paris to celebrate our togetherness. Joyce Sy, we are both crazy when it comes to love!
However, my friends warned me that there is no such utopian state. Though such state is perfect but most of the time, it is impractical. Thus, as a result I might just be disappointed. This led to mind boggling issues to ponder:” Is there such a thing falling in love deeply… helplessly and unconditionally?; and “Would the situation warrant this?. Given this scenario, we had an argument that until now has not been resolved. I called this argument as “The Power Struggle Between the Mind and Heart”. I listed hereunder some of the important points for each argument.
“Mind over Heart”
- We have the power to control our emotions.
- We were created with the head above the heart.
- The mind can recognize what our heart desires, and it will react with sense and logic. In the broad end of the spectrum, our heart will usually respond against everything that makes sense, and make illogical decision. And this decision will often cause more trouble than it is worth.
- We have the power to control our thoughts.
- Happiness comes within our heart.
- Our mind is most sensible when it comes to solving logical issues, but we cannot fully trust it when it comes to real life issues. We always need the heart to fully comprehend real life issues and judge according to our feelings. Sometimes, we need to make illogical decisions to attain a logical situation.
As for me, it is still best to use both of them when it comes to decision-making and it really depends on the situation. When matters concerning love, I strongly believe that it is perfect when there is a meeting between the mind and the heart.
Did I resolve anything? I realized that I am still in utopian state. But as we grow, we become wiser and more concern of our happiness. The more important thing now is that we are happy in everything we do. And what is happiness? According to Gandhi, “happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony”.
So which one: “heart over mind” or “mind over heart”? --- I still don’t know and I have no idea!

Tattooing is an ancient practice that can be traced thousands years ago. Mummies found in relics have markings in different parts of their bodies. It is believed that tattoos have been used by different cultures in the past as a way of identification. Members of a tribe wore inked symbols primarily to mark their status.
Before 1980s, tattoos were not yet socially accepted. It was considered low class and vulgar. People, during those times wore tattoos with unique design that would describe their affiliation to a particular group. It was a visible design used so they could recognize each other.
It was in the early part of the 1980s that tattoos had become a part of fashion trends. Tattoo was an iconic symbol of 1980s in conjunction with the “teenage mutant ninja turtles”, Scooby Doo, Madonna, and Bon Jovi. It was in this era that the art of tattooing was considered as a fine art, and become a part of the mainstream culture, accepted by any gender and background.
As of today, tattooing is a common and widespread practice. Undeniably, more and more famous celebrities are having tattoos in their bodies. Based on my research, a partial list of these popular actors and actresses are as follows:
As of today, because of its popularity and acceptability, I still have this crazy idea of getting a tattoo. I wanted the image of a snake on my nape with its head peering on the side of my neck towards the front. Snake is a versatile animal and has many symbolic values.
It was a belief in Greek traditions that knowledge, power and protection came from the moon and the goddess who ruled it, through her chosen animal, the snake. The “Kundalini Yoga” reveres the snake for its flexibility, which believes that there is a coil of spiritual energy in the body that resembles a snake, and freeing this inner snake leads to enlightenment.
As of now, I haven't decided yet which of these snake designs I would choose for my tattoo. Please help me in deciding which one is the best for me by choosing the letter. Please write your chosen letter in the comment section.

#13 Crazy Thing I Would Love To Do
FLY OVER AN ACTIVE VOLCANO
FLY OVER AN ACTIVE VOLCANO
A Date with Hephaestus was my ultimate goal in my #13 crazy idea. Since my high school days, I was already an avid fan of the Olympian Family. Aside from being a fan, I fantasized being one of them as a goddess. I imagined myself as Aphrodite - the goddess of love, desire and beauty. She was the wife of Hephaestus. Being a wife of the "God of Fire", it was necessary that I had to fly over an active volcano in order to see my husband, Hephaestus down below the source of volcanic eruptions.
In Greek Mythology, Hephaestus is the son of Zeus and Hera. In Roman Mythology, he is known as Vulcan and the son of Jupiter and Juno. In both mythologies, this god is synonymous with fire. Hence, fire is called the "breath of Hephaestus", and manifests itself as a power of physical nature in volcanoes. In stories, when Hephaestus got angry he would heat up his furnace until the volcanoes would erupt. Between the two mythologies, I preferred Greek over Roman.
My obsession with the Olympians is still in me until now. I own both hard and electronic copies of the "Percy Jackson and The Olympians" Series; Kane Chronicles; and the "Heroes of Olympus" Series. I love reading them all over again and again if I have the time. I fall in love with Percy as early as in the "Lightning Thief" and my feeling was strengthened when I saw the movie.
Furthermore, I had already pre-ordered a kindle edition of the "Book Three of Kane Chronicles: The Serpent's Shadow" scheduled to be released by May 1, 2012. I can't wait to read the concluding book of the trilogy series.
Anyway, for a hair-raising experience of flying over an active volcano, please follow the link at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TOcewd4QeI .

Essence of Taste: "Magnum Ice Cream Bar"
One early morning, I got a call from someone who is always a late riser. Sleepy as I was, I answered my cellphone thinking that the call was emergency in nature. Our conversation went like this:
Me : Magnum, as in gun? Why would I write about it? (I was thinking of the
Caller: You are a blogger, right? Write about Magnum.
.44 Magnum which I previously used in my shooting practices while
imagining that I was the female version of “Dirty Harry”).
Caller: Are you not reading the news? Magnum is the newest Selecta Ice Cream.
Everyone wanted to taste it. You should do your blog now.
Me : What? At this early morning, you want me to eat ice cream?
Anyway, I promised my caller that I would do it as soon as I can. At the earliest possible time, I embarked on my task to buy Magnum Ice Cream Bar and to have a bite of this new sensation in the market. I went to my favorite grocery store near my residence, but to my dismay it was not available. I was told that it is only available in 7-11 and ministop convenience stores. I rushed to the nearest 7-11, but again it was not available. I went to a nearby ministop, no luck. I was shocked to find out that all their stocks were sold-out. Anyway, after going to three 7-11 and two ministop stores I surrendered.
The following day, I felt lucky that one of my officemates was able to buy the most coveted ice cream. I asked my officemates to help me taste the ice cream bars since there are three flavors. We took turns in biting and licking the bars… tasting all the three variants – Classic, Almond and Chocolate Truffle.
The Verdict
• Smooth, fine, soft and creamy
• Crunchy coating made of a thick layer of Belgian chocolate• Melt in the mouth not in the hands
• Not messy to eat since it doesn’t melt easily, unlike other ice cream bars we used to eat
• Thick vanilla flavor filling in a cute stick with my initial on it (M)
The ice cream bar was good to the last lick, and considering that it is not cheap Php55 per bar (equivalent to more than USD10), you should be obliged to finished it. I think its targeted clientele are middle to high-income groups willing to shell out a little more for an ice cream bar.

View from the Side: "UnOfficially Yours"
My Thoughts on the Movie
Does a relationship need a formal status? This is the tagline of the movie. However, after watching the movie, I came to realize that it tackles the current social norm according to the younger genre. Relationships, as I gathered in some of my talks with knowledgeable persons are of many forms. Any relationship can be close or open, casual, single or engaged, etc. As my informers are rattling what is the meaning of each relationship, I cannot fully comprehend. Maybe it’s because I was more of a conservative type which I see relationship as two forms only: “in relationship or no relationship at all” and “bad or good relationship”. But the most unexpected lesson I learned came from my teenage niece. Another type of a relationship according to her is “FLIRTATIONSHIP” meaning “more than friends but less than a relationship”. Oh… my head is spinning with all these new learning. Perhaps, I should get a crash course on “Understanding Relationships of Today”!
“UnOfficially Yours” stars John Lloyd Cruz (aka Macky) and Angel Locsin (aka Ces). It is directed by Cathy Garcia Molina. I am not a fan of both actors, but since the movie is the talk of the town and subject of Facebook posts, I obliged myself to see it. Besides, I am still hesitant on having another round of Tagalog movies because of my dismal experience with another movie.
I saw the story as tackling over the thin line that separates morality and immorality. It highlights some form of casual, open relationships and “one night stand” which the Filipino culture does not yet openly accept. Due to this culture, the story came-up with reasons to justify the actions of those involved. In the end, the movie yielded to the accepted norm with the two lead stars falling in love with each other. It is a clear case of “the end justifies the means”.
John Lloyd who is known as one of the matinee idol in Philippine movie and television networks, debuted in this movie to mature role. However, I like him more in his “pakilig” and “pa-tweetum” roles. I had a fair share of laughs while watching the movie especially their taglines. But I must admit that I love more the tandem of “John Lloyd and Sarah Geronimo”. I felt more “kiligs” to their movies and I am excited to see more of their team-up.
Here are some of my unforgettable conversations or quotes I heard from this movie:
Ces mother: “Paano ko makikilala yung taong para sakin, yung taong magmamahal sa akin kung sa bawat sakit na mararamdaman ko ay susuko agad ako.”
Conversation 1:
Macky’s friend: "Sus naman …one night stand nga, eh! Ano pa bang gusto mong mangyari? Nakalimutan mong mag-thank you?
Macky: "Ah ganoon ba… kailangan ba mag thank you?"
Conversation 2:
Ces: "Sa isang bagay kasing pinipili, may isang libo kang tinatanggihan."
Macky: "Eh paano kung patunayan sa iyo ng isang pinili mo na higit pa sya sa isang libong tinanggihan mo?"

This #12 crazy idea was listed as one of my almost impossible missions in #10 ‘flying a jet fighter’. After landing my jetfighter somewhere in the remotest area of South America and accomplishing my death terrifying “skinny dipping” in the South of France, I was again given an incredible mission. As an undercover agent specializing in almost everything, my assignment this time required the tracking down of a lion-like robot. This lion-like robot (codename: Lion X) was a special machine used for counter-intelligence and espionage pursuits by the “war-instigating nation” which until now remains a top secret.
Due to a technical glitch, Lion X went wayward and his last position monitored was somewhere in a deep forest in the amazon. We were puzzled why he went there. The experts concluded that perhaps Lion X thought that he was a real lion and he went to the forest to find his family.
Anyway, my mission is to find Lion X and deactivate him. And this required scouring the rainforest and sleeping on forest floor. It was quite scary since this place is teeming with animal life, especially insects and arachnids (like tarantulas). The largest animals in the rainforest generally live here, including gorillas, ante-eaters, wild boars, tapirs, and jaguars.
In order to help me with my mission, I home-stayed with the Yanomamo tribe of the Amazon rainforests of Brazil and Southern Venezuela. This tribe had lived in scattered villages in the rainforest for hundreds or even thousands of years. They had survived the wild animals with their natural instincts and some of their survival techniques such as hiding and camouflaging.
My mission was a success! My meeting with Lion X was an extraordinary moment of my life, as can be seen on these pictures! He hugged me tightly when he saw me and later introduced me to his family!

Anyway, there are still other wonderful things that could be done in the South of France. One can glimpse the natural beauty of this place. Accordingly, it is also famous for mountainous backwoods perpetually emitting fragrance of the perfumes and smell of thyme … ummh…ummmh! I can also watch those lavender fields while pondering on something sweet and romantic.
I can also indulge in their wine and culinary specialties. This region boasts of its delicious truffles, daube (cooked meat poultry fish and game), anchoaide (anchovy oil and garlic paste), marcassin (young wild boar), and panade (fruit tart). Wines from Bordeaux are famous. Unfortunately, I cannot do much for the wine tasting sessions.

“GO SKINNY-DIPPING AT MIDNIGHT IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE”
I pictured myself in full battle gear I used in my special mission in #10 crazy thing, stripping each clothes/accessories one piece at a time while slowly walking towards the beach, making sure that as I touch the water, I am already in 2 piece suit; and the next is history.
I believed I was too sexy at that time to even think of this. Nonetheless, when I analyzed it over again, it might have been the opposite. Hu hu huh… why on earth I would skinny dip at midnight?

My choice of the setting was perfect. South of France has exotic beaches and is laden with wonders. Think of Nice, Monaco, Marseilles, St. Tropez and Cannes. Imagine Lady Diana (rumor) or Kate Moss caught by cameras skinny dipping in St. Tropez. To get a hint of skinny dipping or diving as in the case of Kate Moss, please visit the following link:

Alternatively, I would do some soul searching. I might find my long lost "soulmate" among the many beautiful towns and castles belonging to medieval ages. Who knows?… fingers crossed! South of France, please find my soulmate!
And finally, I would still go to South of France but definitely not to go skinny dip at midnight… but rather, I would skinny dip at sunrise or at broad daylight! Anyone?

#10 Crazy Thing I Would Love To Do
“FLYING A JET FIGHTER”
At an early age, I wanted to become the first woman astronaut or a military pilot. It was a dream that never came to be. This crazy thought might have been influenced by this unfulfilled dream and the “cold war”.
The “cold war” was a conflict between the communist block led by the Soviet Union and the western block led by the United States. It was a continuing state of political and military tension between the powers of the western world, led by the United States and its NATO allies, and the communist world, led by the Soviet Union, its satellite states and allies. The conflict was expressed through military coalitions, strategic conventional force deployments, extensive aid to states, espionage, propaganda, conventional and nuclear arms races, appeals to neutral nations, rivalry at sports events, and technological competitions such as the Space Race.
I was so fascinated by the idea of espionage and propaganda. I fantasized myself as a top military pilot specializing in counter espionage. As such, my job requires flying a jetfighter over enemies' airspaces undetected. I was particularly interested in two (2) aircrafts: F-16 by the Americans and the MiG-29 by the Russians.
The F-16 known officially as the "Fighting Falcon" is a multirole jet fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). It was designed as an air superiority day fighter and later evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. It has been in used by the USAF since 1976. Although the official name of the F-16 is "Fighting Falcon", it is known to its pilots as the "Viper", due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as after the Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper starfighter.

The Russian “Mikoyan MiG-29” or otherwise known as “Fulcrum” by NATO is a 4th generation jet fighter aircraft. It was designed by the Soviet Union as an air superiority machine. It was developed in the 1970s, used by the Soviet Air Force in 1983, and still remains being used by the Russian Air Force as well as in other foreign nations.
The MiG-29 was primarily developed to counter the American fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighter Falcon.

@Elsa Tan: I was impressed that you will able to follow my illogical thinking. However, I am more crazier or weirder than you by the looks of the items I would like to collect!
#9 Crazy Thing I Would Love To Do
“COLLECT BITS AND PIECES OF MY SPECIAL ONE”
My #9 crazy thought relates to my #8. This one I think is not crazy, but a weird idea.
Sometimes, there are things that I just want to do, but beyond reasons. When asked the question “why do you want to do it?” My reply would be in vernacular, “wala lang, hindi ko alam - gusto ko lang talagang gawin”. In English, ‘nothing, I don’t know – I just want to do it”. This #9 craziness/weirdness falls under this category.
While under the influence of a mystical spell, I was obsessed with the idea of collecting anything and everything relating to my Special One. Most of you would think that this was supposedly easy… better think twice or even more! Well, it depends on what to collect and how it is to be collected. Anyway, the challenge that I imposed on myself was to collect those morsels without him knowing or noticing it. Some of the items on my list can be collected easily, but some would be difficult or even impossible considering what method to use without him noticing it.
Even today, those rated difficult or impossible, I still don’t have any idea on how to collect them. Perhaps, some of you could device a method on how to undertake the mission. Please lend me your thoughts and share in the COMMENT SECTION your ideas or email me directly at merlinagp@gmail.com.
