Today's Inspiration: Encouragement

If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ... make my joy complete by being of the same mind.....   
Philippians 2:1 - 2 NASB

When you listen to the words of encouragement, your spirit perks up and your whole attitude takes on an uplifted stance. But when you allow words of discouragement to penetrate your heart, your attitude becomes pessimistic.
Much of life seems to be working against us, and that's not pessimism - it's a realistic observation. For every person who pats us on the back, there are nine others who clobber us. Therefore we have to cultivate the attitude of encouragement. The habit of encouragement has to be learned. It doesn't come naturally.
A couple recently came to me for counsel. After listening to a recital of petty woes and failures, I gave them an assignment for the next session. "Make a list of all the things you admire in each other." It was a changed couple that returned, each admitting they hadn't known the other really admired them. It had been easier to emphasize each other's faults.
Encouragement strengthens the heart and puts resolve in our actions. It can make the difference between success and failure, sunshine and gloom.

Today's Inspiration: If I Can Just Get Through This Problem

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.... Philippians 4:6

"If I can just get through this problem, I'm sure everything will be okay". Ever think that? You grit your teeth and get through your problem only to find that several more have cropped up on the horizon. It's like pedaling a bicycle. Going uphill is so slow and takes so much energy, and then the downhill run turns quickly into another uphill climb.
The word translated "worry" or "anxiety" in the New Testament is interesting. Paul used it when he described his care for churches. Yet he also used the word when he advised believers not to be overwhelmed by an immediate problem but rather pray and commit it to the Lord.
Jesus spoke of earthly worries. "In this world you will have trouble", He said. But He didn't stop there. He continued, saying, "but take heart! I have overcome the world". Concentrate on finding His strength and power, and learn from experience you are working through right now.

Today's Inspiration: The Power of Time

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes..... James 4:14

What can bring down empires, humble the mightiest of men, crumble a craggy granite peak, and, yet has the power to heal a wound and change a life? Described as the greatest power on earth, that force is time.
There are many inequalities in life. But when it comes to time, everybody gets the exact same allotment: twenty-four hours a day, no more no less.
Every morning you are credited with 186,400 seconds, it's up to you to use or lose it. At the end of the day, whatever you haven't used is lost forever. The fragile fleeting nature of time led Moses to pray: "Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom".
How have you used the time God has given you? He has given each of us a measure of time, and when we are done, He will ask us to account for how we utilized it.
