For some, just the thought of getting caught in an awkward situation inside an elevator is even scarier than getting trapped between floors. Either way, you are left confined inside a very small space suspended by cables somewhere in between building floors, dozens of feet up in the air. And perhaps the scariest part is when you are all alone inside.
My story happened way back December 2013, at the Manila City Hall building. I contracted out a renovation project in one of the offices of the judges at the Regional Trial Court – Manila. It was almost Christmas vacation then. Since there will be no more hearings to be conducted during that season, the Judge decided to renovate his office.
It was a Friday, after office hours. I visited the project to check the construction materials available to be used for the following days and conducted inspection on what the laborers had finished. It was already late and all the offices and hallways were almost empty and dark. The offices of the judges were located at the 4th floor of the building, so I decided to take the elevator to get to the office quickly. As the door closed, I felt some awkward feeling of “kilabot” (goosebumps). I felt cold and I got the feeling that I was not alone inside. I got goosebumps all over my skin and it was as if someone was murmuring on my ears… But then I just ignored it.
All of a sudden, the elevator stopped in the mid-floors of 3rd and 4th and then the lights turned-off. It was pitch black! Total darkness! I knocked at the elevator door while also screaming to get someone’s attention. “Help!!!” I cried. “Open the door!!! “May tao dito!!!” (Someone is here!!!)”. I almost lost all control and almost cried out of fear and panic because it seemed like there was no one who can hear me. It took so long… As if I was left all alone in the building. I took all my courage and tried to calm and pacify myself because I know it won’t help me if I panicked. So, I then decided to close my eyes and opted not to open them. I was avoiding to “see” the darkness or something that might be in there with me. I prayed to God and called my guardian angels to help me in my present situation. I also prayed the rosary, which I always brought in my pocket. It really was taking so long. I knew it even without looking at my watch. I’ve heard unusual sounds and felt movements inside the elevator. I felt so terrible and I’m just waiting on what will happen next. Nothing… Just silence and the numbness all over my body.
Suddenly, after what seemed like forever, I heard some voices and knocking at the door from outside. “Ma’am, ikaw po ba yan (is that you)?”. They were my laborers who were still at the site at the moment. Luckily, they received my text message that I will be going at the site on that very hour, to release their salary, so they waited for me. They heard my screaming and suspected that I was trapped at the elevator because of the power interruption. They helped me out of the elevator, and alas I survived that scary incident! Impossible but it happened to me!
