I was always mindful of this Filipino tradition of scaring kids about the smell of flowers and candles. That when one smelled it somewhere unlikely, it means that there may be dead people around. I was used to such belief. Sometimes, it really did happen that the smell of flowers and candles just suddenly existed in the air while the thing is there are really no flowers or candles lit around. How was that possible?! Recently, I was annoyed by this smell. Giving me chills on why and how did it smelled that way when I was not even seeing a single flower and a candle around. It was less than a week and the month of October was about to end. Houses are now decorated for the Halloween, and kids are excited for the trick-or-treating. The celebration for souls' and saints' is about to come. I was on my way home, riding a jeepney from Poblacion to Palanan, thinking of things that I need to do for the next day. A sudden blow of a familiar scent passed through my nose and it wasn't usual. I have never smelled those scents on my usual routes I use to go home. It was clear to me, that these are traces of a flower and a candle.
It didn't just happen once nor twice or thrice, but maybe for the fifth time already from my counting since the day before. There were no flowers and candles in sight, only scents. Later, I still observed the smell somewhere else, now for the sixth time.
What can be the possible explanation for this? For me, it is just really uncanny… Impossible but it happened to me!
