Experience No. 22:
“Is it a JINX or just a BAD LUCK?”

Do you believe in Jinx? Have you ever found yourself stuck into a series of unfortunate events in a short span of time? Or you’ve simply thought about it as not-so-good day, a mere bad luck, or plain stupidity? Whatever you call it, it is impossible indeed, but it happened to me.
My story begins with what they call an unlucky day, while enjoying to see my Korean friends after such a long time of not seeing each other again at the SM Megamall, I was victimized by a pickpocketer. My bag was slashed and all my money gone. A day after that, I bought a new phone. Enjoyed it a bit and “poofff” lost it. I didn’t know when or how it got lost but so foolish and plain stupidity of me to have not known it. It might have gone while commuting or put it somewhere else I haven’t remembered. I considered myself not a tech savvy but only an avid buyer so I bought a new phone again and live like a normal person would do without thinking another twisted event. However, I guess it is a total misfortune to have experienced it twice and again and again – the pickpocketing incident and the clumsiness. So, my co-workers, well if it’s okay to namedrop, Joyce started calling it either I was jinxed or I myself a Jinx.
Of course, just like everybody, I did not believe it at first. Even though it was very unlikely for me to buy a low-tech gadget like Nokia 1100, still for the first time I just did with a hope of solving the seemingly syndicated events. A month or so, I thought I got off the brink. But it’s not. It was the peak of it all instead. Not a pickpocketing incident this time nor a clumsiness issue but a “robbery/holdup” case inside a dental clinic along J. P. Rizal St. corner Kakarong St. That time, I was with Kristine for our dental braces schedule and first down payment at around 7PM. So we went there earlier than the call time. We were only three then – Me, Kristine, and the caretaker/dental aid – since the dentist still on his way. A trike driver with two (2) other men parked at front. I wasn’t paying attention to their actuations since they were outside the clinic. The dental aide went out to talk to them a bit and then went back in to the wash room. The two men suddenly went in and declared “hold up” while the other lookout rolled down the shutter door. The other man with a cooking knife strangled me while the other with “sumpak” (an improvised handgun) had Kristine who’s freaking out in fear. I have to stay calm and tried negotiating. They took off and left us nothing but fear and quite disoriented of what to do since we were also locked up inside. We called Makati 168 and got rescued.
From then on, I thought of it really as signs of jinx. Just like a phone, I need a reset. Then I started attending bible studies with a small group in Christ Commission Fellowship (CCF) and also Sunday masses. Also, instead of poking fun at it and taking it negatively, I see it as a learning experience for me to be more vigilant and cautious at all times. And now, I have my amulet of good luck and serenity to repel the jinx and other negative energies, that is, my wife and my own child soon :)
Impossible but it happened to me!
