Today's Bible Guide: Build 'Em Up in a World that Tears 'Em Down
May the God who gives you endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus....
Romans 15:5
Everybody needs encouragement. You can develop the art of encouragement by practicing the following:
- Focus on a positive aspect of a person, and say it. Your comments should focus upon something positive, leave out negative observations. Mixed messages like, "Your sales were pretty good this month, but if you had taken my advice, they would have been better," don't qualify as an encouragement.
- Be sincere in what you say. Encouragement is not flattery; it is a decision to say something good that is true. A phone call, a note, a few words in passing - these do a lot to boost others in a world that puts people down.
- Cultivate encouragement as a habit. One of the reasons we give so little of encouragement is that our old nature tends to make us look for the flaws and failures of others. In building each other up, we build up ourselves as well.
@Tomorrow Can Be Beautiful
Today's Stars
You may be having some volatile feelings about a person or a predicament. Maybe you are outraged over the unfairness associated with the situation. Maybe you are angry about a betrayal or because you were let down. Maybe there was some bungling and you want someone to be held responsible. So go ahead and rant and rave. Say any crazy thing that comes to mind. You'll feel better. Well, you'll feel better for a few minutes. Then the reality of what you said that you shouldn't have said will smack you in the face and you'll regret it. Deal with a current matter in a mature and calm way, and you can't go wrong.
