Not long before, we know for sure that 0917-xxxxxxx is a Globe Mobile Number, 0918-xxxxxxx is a SMART Communications Mobile Number and 0973-xxxxxxx is an Express Telecom Mobile Number. These three (3) digit numbers (917, 918 or 973) are called mobile area codes or prefixes used by the three existing mobile companies during the early days of mobile or cellular phones in the Philippines. However, as demand for mobile transactions increased rapidly, these existing codes have been fully used already. As such, new prefixes are being approved by the National Telecommunications Commission, an attached agency under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to accommodate the growing demands of mobile access.
This blog post was inspired by a research I made in one of my projects for a marketing plan. Anyway, I am sharing this with you as a reference. This is a very useful information if you want to maximize the “bundled offerings” of the different telecoms…. i.e. you have to know what network does the number you are calling or texting belongs to in order to fully utilize the unlimited or discounted promos on the same network.
I tried devising a scheme for an easy way to recognize the numbers, but unfortunately I can’t find a unique one. This is the best one that I was able to achieved (if you will find another way, please share it with me):
- Majority of the prefixes belonging to Globe ends in 5, 6, or 7. However, 907 and 947 belongs to Smart; and 977 is NextMobile.
- Prefixes ending in 2 or 3 are Sun, with the exclusion of 912 and 813 (Smart); and 973 (Express Mobile).
- All other numbers (0, 1, 4, 8, and 9) are used by Smart except 978 and 979 (NextMobile); and 974 (Express Mobile).
The table below shows the prefixes for each mobile providers.
